Periodic breathing is a type of breathing pattern in which a person alternates between periods of deep breathing and periods of shallow breathing or pauses in breathing. This is most commonly seen in premature infants and can also occur in adults with sleep apnea, heart failure, or other medical conditions. Treatment for periodic breathing depends on the underlying cause and may include lifestyle changes, medication, or medical devices to support breathing during sleep.
