The lateral hypothalamus is a region of the brain located in the hypothalamus that is involved in regulating sleep and wakefulness. The lateral hypothalamus is responsible for the release of arousal-promoting neurotransmitters, such as histamine and orexin, which help to promote wakefulness. It also contains neurons that are involved in controlling food intake, and it is thought to play a role in regulating energy balance.
