Non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep is one of the two stages of sleep, the other being rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. NREM sleep is characterized by a lack of eye movement, slow brainwaves, and a decrease in muscle tone. NREM sleep makes up the majority of sleep time and is considered the "restorative" stage of sleep, during which the body repairs and rejuvenates itself.
