Fatal insomnia or fatal familial insomnia is a rare and incurable prion disease that affects the brain and causes progressive sleep disturbances, including difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, vivid nightmares, and eventual loss of the ability to sleep at all. Fatal insomnia is a fatal disease, with a median survival time of 18 months after onset of symptoms.
