Sleep specialists, also called sleep doctors, are physicians trained in the field of sleep medicine. Sleep medicine is a sub specialty of internal medicine.
What do sleep doctors do?
Sleep doctors diagnose and treat any of the over 90 different sleep disorders some of which include sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, parasomnias, REM sleep behavior disorder and circadian rhythm sleep disturbances to name a few.
Education of sleep specialists
Sleep specialists must first complete a residency in the primary specialties of internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, neurology or ENT surgery etc and then do a fellowship in sleep medicine (or be grand fathered in before the specialty requirements were put in).
